About Dr Wong Sing Yee

I am a Counselling Psychologist, registered with both the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Psychological Society (BPS) in the United Kingdom (UK).

In the UK, a Counselling Psychologist and a Clinical Psychologist are very similar in background, training and the jobs they do (it’s different in other countries). You can read more about what a counselling psychologist at this web page.

I am trained in conducting assessments and providing individual, group, and couples therapy. I am able to support individuals and work with a wide range of mental health difficulties and experiences including depression, anxiety, low mood, stress, bereavement, existential questions and obsessive-compulsive disorder. I also have specialisation in working with individuals experiencing disordered eating/eating disorders and have a strong academic and clinical background in my area of expertise.

I am also able to support couples who are going through difficulties with the dynamics of their relationship or for those who would like to strengthen and enhance their communication skills and strengthen their emotional bond.

My approach to therapy

I believe that each therapeutic relationship is special and deserves its own space and approach. This means that as a therapist, I will ask about your experiences, beliefs, emotions, preferences, and unique individual perspectives before we collaboratively explore the modality which would work best for you. As a Counselling Psychologist, I am trained in a variety of psychological approaches, including existential therapy, the Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA) and cognitive behavioural therapies, allowing me to work in an integrative way while fully grounding my practice within scientific evidence.

How we will work together

I would like to explore your present lived experiences, whilst taking into account your past encounters, in order to understand your objectives from seeking help. I believe it is important to fully understand the difficulties and distress that may arise within you. My practice will aim to address and survive the difficulties within your present context in a mindful and contained way.

I acknowledge that therapy itself can be a daunting experience and would like to support you on this journey by providing a safe, empathetic and compassionate space. I hope that you will gain new insight and perspectives which will allow us to progress at a pace that best suits you. I also strive to focus on the process within each therapy session, and to acknowledge that at times, therapy can be experienced as challenging. However, through these challenges, I believe change and growth can happen and the therapeutic process will hopefully create a positive impact within you.

My experiences

I have personal lived experiences around how our complex relationship with food and body image can cause difficulties within ourselves and this affects how we interact with the world around us. Through this, I have developed both a personal and professional understanding, allowing me to explore all relevant contextual, relational and intersubjective experiences within your current situation.

Looking specifically at my area of expertise, my experiences and my journey with food has allowed me to now view food as fuel and medicine for our bodies, and this perception can have a lasting positive impact on our wellbeing.

My qualifications & accreditation

I spent my undergaduate years in Australia at the University of Melbourne. I have a Masters from University College London and a Masters and a Doctorate from Regent’s University London. I am registered Practioner Psychologist with the UK’s Health and Care Professions’ Council.

A bit more about me

Coming from a South-East Asian cultural background, I understand first-hand the importance of acknowledging the impact of different socio-cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. This has truly cemented my practice in working from a more humanistic, relational and phenomenological view. In my practice, I have worked with clients presenting with various psychological difficulties such as OCD, trauma, anxiety, depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, suicide ideations and eating issues.
