Heng Wai Yei

Hello! I am a licensed counsellor, registered with the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (KB11094, PA10701). I am trained to provide therapy to children, teenagers, adults, and couples. I provide therapy primarily in English, but I can also communicate at a conversational level in Mandarin and Malay.

I believe that every person experiences challenges as we walk down the path called life. Some challenges can be overcome with knowledge that we already have, while others may feel slightly beyond our ability. I consider it a privilege to journey alongside my clients as they navigate life’s challenges, offering emotional support and equipping them with practical skills to manage and overcome difficulties. I seek to add value to my clients regardless of age or experience.

I work full time at Reigate Grammar School Kuala Lumpur (RGSKL) as part of Share Resolve’s partnership with RGSKL to provide counselling and psychological services to the school.

Qualifications

I completed both my Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) and Masters of Counselling at HELP University, Malaysia.

I learnt Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) during my training. I received extensive supervision and training in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) & Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) from Dr. Dan Seal as part of the ReFlex Method (Share Resolve’s adaptation of these therapeutic approaches for Asian cultures).

I am also trained to support clients who have experienced trauma using Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET). This means that I provide individualized support to each of my clients with consideration on the impact of trauma on how they experience life. When needed, Narrative Exposure Therapy can be used to support clients who display symptoms related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Experience

Prior to working with Share Resolve I was the School Lead for Humankind. I led a team of mental health professionals as we pioneered school mental health programs with local private schools and alternative learning centers for refugees.

Concurrently, I regularly conducted individual sessions for school age children, young adults and refugees to improve their well-being. I had the opportunity to work with individuals facing various challenges such as emotional challenges (e.g. anxiety, depression, stress, grief), relationship challenges (e.g. family, friends, colleagues, partners), adjustment challenges (e.g. navigating life direction, past trauma, transitions), and many others. I have also worked with couples experiencing communication difficulties and seeking to establish a future direction.

I was also responsible for supporting the development of trainee counsellors, which gave me the opportunity to refine my own approach to guiding and mentoring fellow professionals.

How I work

In my sessions, I seek to create a safe space so that you are able to share your thoughts and emotions as they are. I do so by listening to you with curiosity and seeking to understand your view of your own experiences, all at your own pace. There are various reasons that may make you feel more or less comfortable to share, and we will be navigating that together.

We would also be working collaboratively throughout therapy – ensuring that the direction of therapy aligns with the life that you want and the support you receive works for you. This means that I will seek feedback from you at various points in therapy to ensure that our work is still relevant to you, thus empowering you to take ownership of your own journey.

Lastly, I believe that therapy is a difficult journey as you have to share with a stranger your vulnerabilities, experience the pain again in your recounting, take actions to move forward, bounce back when you face setbacks amidst many other steps. I understand that it can be a journey that requires much courage and willingness from you to step into. At whichever step you are at, I will be here to walk alongside you as we take each step forward.

It is normal if you are unsure if I am the right person to journey with you, I would encourage you to let me know in our first session and I will gladly answer your concerns. So, if you are ready to take that step forward and would not mind working with me, I would be more than happy to journey alongside you.
