This 6 week course was intended as an introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for trainee psychiatrists at the University of Malaya’s Medical Centre.

We met for 90 minutes every Thursday afternoon and used the following schedule:

Week 1: The therapeutic alliance and counselling.

How do we encourage people to speak with us?
What is counselling?
Why is CBT is different from counselling?

Week 2: Behavioural Therapy Key concepts

Formulating using behaviourism
Common interventions:
Behavioural activation
Graduated exposure
Exposure response prevention

Week 3: Cognitive Therapy

Key concepts & theoretical background
Socratic questioning – guided self discovery
Thought challenging

Week 4: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Bringing it together – the CBT model and how it links Behaviourism and Cognitive therapy.
Mind traps: Vicious cycles
Panic Disorder protocol

Week 5: 3rd Wave, other ideas & new developments

Compassionate Mind
Mindfulness
Problem solving

Week 6: Putting it into Practice

Choosing your potential client
Thinking about applying CBT
Troubleshooting
