What is the Manage Emotions Live Life Program?

The Manage Emotions Live Life program will teach you skills you can use to feel happier and more fulfilled by life!

However, for reasons we’ll explain, it’s impossible for humans to feel happy all the time. So, this program will also help you manage the unpleasant thoughts and feelings that we can’t avoid.

What’s included in the program?

The program includes 8 meetings, of an hour each, with one of our psychologists. You’ll also be given materials to help track your progress, practice new skills between meetings and resolve problems.

Each meeting will be between just you and our psychologist so we can personalise the program to you.

If you don’t like the program, you don’t have to complete it. If you need more time, you can add extra meetings.

We recommend meeting once a week or once every two weeks for the best progress. Our Client Relations Manager, Vivian, will help you schedule meeting times that work for you.

Who is the program for?

The skills you’ll learn on this program are useful to everyone. You don’t need to be facing any problems to benefit from the program but it’s particularly useful if you (or someone you know) is struggling with:

  • Low mood
  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Worry
  • Anger
  • Stress
  • Lack of motivation
  • Troubling thoughts
  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Gambling
  • Eating too much
  • Eating too little
  • Over-using social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter)
  • Watching too much YouTube

Is there any proof the program will help?

The program is based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). There’s a huge amount of scientific evidence showing that ACT is effective at helping people.

We used our experience working with hundreds of Malaysians to adapt the program to be better suited to the needs of Malaysians.

We will be testing the program in research studies at the University of Malaya. It will also be translated and further adapted for difficult cultural groups in Malaysia.

What will I learn?

Week 1: Why is it so difficult to be happy?

We’ll explain why it’s so difficult to be happy and why most of us accidentally make ourselves feel worse by following what seems to be ‘common sense’.

Week 2: Your personalised roadmap

We’ll work together to come up with a ‘roadmap’, specifically tailored to you. We’ll decide what you want to do and how you want to be for you to feel your life is fulfilling. This will help you recognise the emotional traps that you may often fall into and guide you towards a happier more fulfilling life.

Week 3 – 6: Skills training

The roadmap gives you the direction you want to go in. But you’ll need to build a set of skills to help you stay on the right path. The skills include:

  • Attention training,
  • Being kind to yourself
  • Unhooking from thoughts
  • Opening up to emotions

We’ll introduce the skills and help you find the best way of regularly practicing them.

Week 7 & 8: Using the skills to improve life

We explain how to use the skills to get out of the emotional traps that so often get in the way of us living a fulfilling life.We give specific plans for traps such as; worry, thinking about the past, procrastinating, withdrawing, drinking & overeating.

We explore how to further improve life using the skills you have learnt.

Who will I speak to?

You will be guided through the course by our facilitators, Marianne or Shun Ee who are trainee clinical psychologists who will soon qualify and have received intensive training from Dr. Daniel Seal. In addition to their training, Dr. Dan will be spending at least 5 hours a week supervising Marianne and Shun Ee. They will be able to discuss your case (anonymously) with Dr. Dan to get his advice on how best to help you.

Marianne and Shun Ee follow our ethics and confidentiality guidelines.

How much does the program cost?

The full program includes eight meetings with one of our facilitators.

Each one-hour meeting costs RM150 during normal working hours (8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday).

A one-hour meetings costs RM195 outside of working hours (after 6pm on a weekday or anytime on a Saturday or Sunday).

We aim to give you as much choice as possible. So we don’t require you to pay for the whole program in advance. You only have to pay for one meeting at a time. If you want to stop the program you don’t need to pay for meetings that you didn’t have.

FAQs

Q: What’s the difference between this course and speaking with one of the experienced clinical psychologists?
A: We developed this course as a more affordable alternative to meeting with one of our experienced clinical psychologists.

Q: Will I have to talk about my childhood or past?
A: Only if you want to! The course focuses on what is happening now. If you want to understand why you by discussing your past then that’s something we can help with. However, you certainly don’t have to.
