Who is the ReFlex program at UMMC for?

The ReFlex program teaches skills that are useful to everyone. However, the skills are particularly useful if you struggle with:

  • Low mood (depression)
  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Worry
  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Stress
  • Lack of motivation
  • Troubling thoughts
  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Eating too much or too little
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Avoiding important tasks or situations
  • Overusing social media, YouTube or Netflix
  • Or any other problem involving difficult emotions, thoughts or challenging life situations.

What will I learn?

Each workshop builds on the previous workshop so the program works best if you can attend all 6 workshops. There will be a one hour workshop each week for 6 weeks. The workshops will be interactive so we will encourage you to talk with us and with each other. Between workshops we’ll ask you to practice the skills you’ve learnt. Here’s what you will learn each week:

Week 1: How to be happy

We’ll help you find out what you need to do to be happier. This is different for each person and depends on what is important to you. We will help you identify what your core values are and how to do actions that are inline with those values.

Week 2: What’s difficult & how we get trapped.

We’ll answer these two big questions:

  • Why do I get trapped doing things I’d rather not do (e.g worrying, arguing, overeating, drinking, overusing social media, avoiding tasks etc)?
  • What should I do when I‘m facing difficult situations, thoughts and emotions?

Week 3: Attention training

We’ll help you train your attention so you can zoom out & see the bigger picture, then zoom in to do what’s important.

Week 4: Creating new habits

We’ll show you how to make it easier to do what’s important to you.

Week 5:  Accepting emotions & unhooking from thoughts

We’ll teach you how to stop emotions controlling you. We will also show you how to unhook from difficult thoughts such as ‘I’m not good enough’.

Week 6: How to ‘self-mentor’ & be kinder to yourself

You’ll learn how to be your own mentor and how to positively motivate yourself.

Which language will the ReFlex Program run in?

The ReFlex programs at UMMC will in English because they will be run by Dr Dan Seal who is British. Dr Dan will be joined by Leng, who is also a UMMC Clinical Psychologist and speaks Malay, Mandarin & Cantonese. Leng will translate if there are any misunderstandings. In the future the Program will be run in other languages.

Group Program or Individual Program?

At UMMC you will attend the ReFlex program as part of a group of eight to twelve people. If you would rather not be in a group then you can meet with one of the psychologists at Share Resolve for one-to-one support. Fees start at RM95 per session or RM50 on our affordability scheme.

When & where

The group will most likely meet on a Thursday at the 2nd floor of the Department of Psychological Medicine at UMMC in the room just opposite the lifts. We are intending to start the program after Chinese New Year 2024. When we contact you to invite you onto the program we will give you the exact dates.

Fees

Each week when you arrive at UMMC you will need to register for and pay a fee of RM20 (approximately – we are checking the exact amount) at the counter on the ground floor of the Department of Psychological Medicine.

Is there any proof the ReFlex program will help?

The ReFlex program is based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) which is a type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). There’s a huge amount of scientific evidence showing that ACT is effective at helping people. As of October 2023, researchers around the world have conducted over 1,050 Randomized Controlled Trials and published thousands of research papers supporting the effectiveness of ACT in reducing suffering and improving well-being. Dr Dan and the local psychologists have adapted ACT to be more appropriate for people in Malaysia. This is a continuing process and we welcome any feedback to improve the program. We may ask you to complete some feedback forms to help us evaluate the program.
