USM-UPSI: Masters in Clinical Psychology

USM and UPSI are two government universities that are jointly offering a Masters in Clinical Psychology. The course can be studied full time in 2 years or part time for up to 6 years. The intake is in September.

The USM-UPSI clinical psychology training programme is a recently established course. There is very little information online about this course. The lack of information suggests the course is not yet well setup and may have particular problems with a lack of placements for trainees or a lack of experienced clinical psychologists to do the teaching.

This is important because trainee Clinical Psychologists need to learn by working under the supervision of an experienced clinical psychologist. There are a limited number of clinical psychologists in Malaysia and only a small proportion of them are able to offer placements for trainee clinical psychologists. Some of the newer courses have found it difficult to find psychologists who can offer supervision to trainees.

It is not clear who will be conducting the teaching at USM-UPSI. It would be wise to check if they have a sufficient number of experienced clinical psychologist to offer good quality teaching.

It is not clear what the course structure is as this information does not seem to be available on either universities website. Their website addresses can be found at the link below.

    • Hi Quinnie, we’ve just corrected the links to the webpages for the course on USM and UPSI’s website. So you may be able to find out more from the universities themselves. We haven’t heard much about the course. Although there have continued to be issues with trainees getting sufficient placement hours.

      • Thank you very much for your reply and updates. I have a question. The part where you mentioned about trainees getting insufficient placement hours, is it still the same case now

        • Based on what I have heard, yes, but it’s possible that’s just true for those I heard it from. You could try contacting the course or their existing trainees and asking them (you should be able to find them via LinkedIn).
